First, it would flow into the Kissimmee River, slowly passing down the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes before meandering through marshlands for more than 100 miles and emptying into Lake Okeechobee. In the wet season, the lake would swell and overflow its southern banks, sending billions of gallons of fresh water in a shallow “sheet flow” 50 to 60 miles wide—through sawgrass marshes, cypress hammocks, and mangrove forests—that eventually mixed with the salt water of Florida Bay. The Everglades was a hydrological wonder that supported an extraordinary abundance of animal and plant life, much of it found nowhere else in the world. But for the past century, humans have been tinkering with the plumbing of the landscape by building roads that block the sheet flow, draining marshes to create farmland, digging canals to redirect water, and constructing dikes to raise the level of Lake Okeechobee. As a result, the awe-inspiring system that Marjory Stoneman Douglas dubbed the “River of Grass” has been disconnected from its own headwaters and is suffering a death by a thousand cuts. Working with the Everglades Foundation, Orvis and its customers played an important role in lobbying for approval of funding for the Everglades Agricultural Area Reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee in 2019.
