what goes into designing some of the wilder courses. 00:00 [Music] 00:04 so a game of four guys consists of five 00:07 rounds in which 60 players go in at the 00:11 star crazy obstacle courses team games 00:14 arena battles there's a huge amount of 00:18 variety and the player count gets 00:20 whittled down until eventually there is 00:22 one winner at the end when designing the 00:25 levels we thank you very much about what 00:28 they aim in life was and that came down 00:29 to the game show aspect we watched a lot 00:32 of like videos of things that our game 00:35 is based on so things like takeshi's 00:37 castle it's a knockout obstacle course 00:40 videos those things are ripe with the 00:42 same sorts of concepts that are in for 00:44 guys the other things we did were a bit 00:46 more practical well we thought we had to 00:48 really get into the head of a fork so 00:51 some of us went to what's called the 00:55 monster alexandra palace and yeah we 01:00 spent a couple of hours just hurling 01:02 ourselves around this insane fancy oslo 01:06 course but then that also led into this 01:09 idea of the sort of playfulness and if 01:11 they the idea of them being full of 01:13 energy and bouncing into things we made 01:15 everything soft and so the lots of 01:16 inspiration came from the soft play 01:18 areas that their kids use so there's 01:20 lots of vinyl padding and bright colored 01:22 bouncy walls and scaffolding and kind of 01:25 water after that parents probably 01:27 recognized in other companies I've been 01:29 in a level designer will only design 01:32 environments and structures so a game 01:35 designer will give them limitations and 01:37 tell them what needs to happen in this 01:38 space and a level designer will create 01:40 that space working if the level designer 01:42 or four guys is an interesting process 01:45 because we are essentially designing a 01:48 new game each time we do it obviously we 01:51 have the restraints of what you can do 01:54 in four guys but we're not just making 01:56 new levels we're making new game modes 01:57 we sort of go through a pretty rigid 02:00 process which involves the entire team 02:02 which I think a lot of other level 02:04 design processes don't go through myself 02:07 and the other designers we get in a room 02:12 we throw out mechanic ideas you know how 02:15 can the level design you know bring the 02:18 best out of the game design and I think 02:21 there's something really cool in the way 02:23 we have to work on this on this game 02:26 because there are so many players in for 02:29 guys because there's a lot chaos it 02:32 creates these unique moments but you 02:35 have to provide players with the tools 02:38 and the playground for those moments 02:40 happen within and so the world had to be 02:43 completely non-threatening it had to be 02:45 something that you'd want to jump into 02:47 this like I don't care if I jump over 02:48 this thing because I know I'm going to 02:49 bounce off and fall under that other 02:50 thing I might run into this spinning 02:53 platform with this big hammer but it's a 02:54 big inflatable hammer so it's gonna 02:56 knock me off and I'm not gonna get hurt 02:57 so that kind of the enthusiasm for for 03:01 the game kind of leads into the design 03:03 of the levels so for every greatful guys 03:06 around there is a sad room where there's 03:09 just a giant trash heap failed ideas 03:12 I made a basketball round but I stand by 03:16 as one of the greatest things that I've 03:17 ever played everybody else who touched 03:19 it said it was awful and they couldn't 03:21 work it would never work 03:22 but I've held on to the fibers and I'm 03:25 pretty sure we're gonna get it in one 03:27 day so so look out for basketball words 03:28 coming coming any day this is a myth 03:31 amongst the team there was a minesweeper 03:35 level that originally got pitched and 03:37 they made a prototype of it I concept is 03:40 a round based on minesweeping so you had 03:45 basically a minefield that full guys had 03:49 to run across and if they ran over a 03:53 mine the sort of the ground exploded and 03:57 they went flying up into the air nobody 03:59 really understood the concept because 04:00 it's very confusing that was a very 04:04 weird one didn't quite work it it wasn't 04:08 fun and it's not fun it's not all guys 04:13 from there I think the best ideas come 04:15 we have a lot of ideas where a lot of 04:17 round ideas where maybe it didn't work 04:20 out but there was one little thing that 04:22 were like that felt really fun let's try 04:23 and make 04:24 being around just that my favorite 04:26 events are basically the races anytime 04:28 we get to just charge through the level 04:30 with 40 other dudes getting knocked over 04:33 bouncing all over the place 04:34 big smashed around and then somehow man 04:37 you shouldn't is great too to the end is 04:38 the most satisfying 04:39 I love the logic games we've only got 04:43 one in there at the moment 04:44 it's called match fall but you have to 04:46 remember a sequence I like that because 04:49 all of the players who normally do well 04:54 in our team don't do as well on that 04:58 round and I think that's just a really 04:59 nice way of balancing that for players 05:02 that are good at say remembering 05:03 something as opposed to players who are 05:04 really good at physical challenges I'm a 05:07 massive football fan and the first round 05:09 I got put on for that reason was the 05:12 football level and you know it's so 05:16 simple it's just two boys two teams two 05:18 goals football for me is the one that I 05:21 can't get bored of it I just want to 05:23 play I want to play it right now if I'm 05:24 honest it's no contest it's all mounting 05:27 we prototyped this round in the very 05:31 early days to get to a bunch of shows 05:32 and people loved it and it's just sort 05:36 of got a special place in my heart so 05:39 one of the most exciting things about 05:40 for guys is that we're going to be 05:42 continually adding new game modes and on 05:46 top of that we're going to be taking the 05:47 game modes that are already there 05:49 andrey mixing them and creating new 05:51 experiences for those day modes and new 05:53 maps and that kind of thing so i think 05:56 the the full guys experience is going to 05:58
