00:00 The reason I'm writing is to ask, "Can you help me?"
00:04 "I am serving a 40 to 60 year sentence.
00:06 As God is my witness,
00:08 I am not guilty."
00:12 We get flooded with letters
00:14 from all over the country. They're human beings
00:16 who are claiming to be wrongly convicted.
00:18 We realized that there were so many things
00:20 wrong with this system,
00:22 so we started the Innocence Project.
00:27 The oath is to seek justice.
00:29 For some people, justice has meant
00:31 maximizing charges, years and convictions.
00:34 Twenty-eight years? My brother thought,
00:36 "No on e's gonna hear me." It's like the coffin is closed.
00:41 This case had no DNA, no fingerprints,
00:44 no gunshot residue.
00:46 I became outraged at how thin the evidence was.
00:49 Twenty years passed after I was convicted.
00:51 Almost 28 years. That's more than half my life.
00:55 Unfortunately, the mentality among too many judges,
00:57 too many district attorneys, is the ends justify the means.
01:00 I think, "Is they gon' ever find
01:02 the proof that I didn't commit this crime?"
01:04 They withheld evidence on purpose
01:07 to get a conviction. Period.
01:10 If we find that the client is innocent,
01:13 we don't stop until we win.
01:14 I never thought this day would come...
01:18 but it's coming.
01:20 -He's coming home. -It's coming.
01:25 I went to prison at the age of 18
01:27 and I didn't see the streets until the age of 46.
01:29 When I got out of jail, I took my shoes off
01:31 and just walked around the yard.
01:33 Twelve years I hadn't touched no grass.
01:37 I wonder what would have happened
01:39 if my incarceration wouldn't be part of my story.
01:42 I wouldn't do this job if I didn't think
01:44 it could be fixed.
01:45 I wanted him to know
01:46 there was someone there fighting for him.
01:48 I think the best thing a lawyer can do with their license
01:52 is get an innocent guy out of prison. - advertisement spot 2020
