Steve Martin's early films caught comedy at a crossroads: On the surface, they were old-fashioned slapstick spoofs, with sly innuendo, trappings and happy endings, just steps from Abbott and Costello remote. But they also managed to capture everything that was best in comedy at the time: Airplanes! Behavior.
The parody was inspired by an unconventional 2015 SNL sketch about a dancing robot in a glass box called "The Alan," starring Bill Hader. While billed as the "future of leisure and entertainment," its owner was baffled that all Allen seemed to be doing was a variation of the same dance, and a facial expression suggesting "a bit stinks." The sketches were cropped in time, but Harder's easy-to-remember dance moves weren't forgotten, spawning a Twitter parody account four years later in which he danced from Fleetwood Mac to Harry Styles. –Stefan Sirucek
