VIDEO Mercedes-Benz The all-new electric G-Class – Electric Architecture TV commercial 2024 • The all-new electric G-Class – Electric Architecture | Teaching Tech Even at first glance, there’s no mistaking that the all-new electric G-Class is a proper G. The G 580 with EQ Technology retains the angular silhouette including all iconic elements. But under the bodywork, things look quite different. In the new episode of "Teaching Tech", we take a look underneath, where the developers had to accommodate the battery, electric motors and gearboxes. [Mercedes-Benz G 580 mit EQ Technologie | Energieverbrauch kombiniert: 30,3-27,7 kWh/100 km | CO₂-Emissionen kombiniert: 0 g/km | CO₂-Klasse: A] #gclass #G580 #ElectricGClass 0:02 Welcome to “Teaching Tech” 0:04 - starring the all-new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology. 0:21 This time, we’re looking at the electric drivetrain and its vehicle integration. 0:26 From the outside, there’s no mistaking that 0:28 the all-new G 580 with EQ Technology is a proper G-Class. 0:34 But, under the bodywork, there are many differences. 0:37 There are differential locks, of course, 0:39 but with electronic instead of mechanical components. 0:43 The vehicle generates “virtual” differential locks within milliseconds 0:46 through precisely metered torque vectoring, 0:49 which distributes torque to the wheels with the most grip. 0:52 As a result, the all-new electric G-Class feels incredibly composed, 0:57 agile, and manoeuverable, even on extreme terrain. 1:01 It is also possible to vary the distribution of torque 1:04 between the individual wheels. 1:06 The result is maximum traction with maximum flexibility. 1:10 So, in contrast to vehicles with mechanical locks, 1:13 the all-new electric G-Class always remains as agile 1:17 as possible and does not lose any of its turning circle. 1:20 The advanced drive concept in the all-new electric G-Class 1:23 is based on four individually controlled electric motors 1:26 mounted close to the wheels. 1:29 The motors are mounted to the ladder frame and come in double packs 1:33 two in a housing at the front axle and two at the rear axle. 1:41 This arrangement ensures torque is delivered 1:43 whenever and wherever it’s required. 1:48 The electric drivetrain also enables numerous new features 1:51 that are exclusive to the all-new electric G-Class, 1:55 including the G-TURN and G-STEERING. 2:02 Supporting the electric powertrain are four shiftable gearboxes: 2:06 each motor comes with its own LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction. 2:10 That’s why the all-new electric G-Class has not just one, 2:14 but two gears as the basis for its unparalleled off-road capabilities. 2:19 When the LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction 2:22 is activated, the transmission ratio changes 2:24 from 1:11 to 1:21 which leads to significantly higher torque, 2:29 lower power load on the motors during slow off-road driving 2:33 and improved recuperation when driving downhill off-road. 2:36 As a result, the vehicle exerts much less force 2:40 and requires less energy when travelling uphill 2:43 with LOW RANGE activated. 2:47 Let’s talk about the centrepiece of every electric car: the battery. 2:51 It has been positioned precisely between two longitudinal struts 2:56 in the ladder frame, requiring a slight lift of the vehicle. 3:01 Even so, the battery pack positioning ensures 3:04 a low centre of gravity, which has positive effects 3:07 on the driving characteristics. 3:09 The 12 battery modules are installed in two layers 3:12 and are always kept at the optimum operating temperature 3:15 by special cooling plates. 3:17 To protect it from the ingress of water and dirt, 3:20 the battery is encased in a torsion-resistant housing. 3:24 The electric drivetrain posed special challenges 3:26 for the design of the underbody plate, which must protect 3:29 the battery from the physical impact of ground strikes 3:32 and be as light and efficient as possible. 3:35 It must also be compatible with all other vehicle functions, 3:39 fit into a very small installation space and fulfil the requirements 3:43 for crash characteristics, aerodynamics, and aeroacoustics. 3:48 The underbody protection is made from a carbon-fibre composite material, 3:52 which improves the rigidity of the plate, ensures a high level 3:56 of corrosion protection and saves weight. 3:59 The all-new G 580 with EQ Technology comes with 4:02 an aerodynamically optimised bonnet, a new A-pillar cladding, 4:06 a spoiler lip on the roof trim strip and air curtains 4:10 in the rear wheel arch extensions. 4:13 These aerodynamic updates also contribute to improved noise comfort. 4:17 In addition, the engineers fitted capsules 4:20 around the electric motors to combat noise directly at the source. 4:24 The motors, which are firmly connected to the ladder frame, 4:27 are fitted with special elastomer bearings to decouple them 4:30 from the passenger compartment. 4:32 And there is more. 4:34 New insulation materials have been used to reduce noise 4:37 and vibration wherever possible, 4:39 including filling body shell cavities with insulating foam. 4:43 There you go – now you know everything 4:46 you need to know about the architecture 4:48 of our all-new G 580 with EQ Technology.
