The next day, comedian Louis C.K. called Notaro and told her he wanted to release audio of the show. If this was a story about emotionally protected people, Bill finds himself in the fort, wary of telling his wife's children that he will have "no legal relationship" with them the day their mother dies. In another show, that would have been shorthand for a character's brutal rejection, but Rothman plays it as Bill is offering comfort, as if the lack of bureaucratic attention might help. In fact, the most intriguing arcs of the entire season are Notaro's hesitant attempts to bond with Bill, and it's in those quiet, reclusive moments that Mississippi One really thrives. Like Notaro's stand-up comedy, One Mississippi is oriented toward tragedy—but it's the way it guides the audience through that tragedy that makes it so haunting.

Although Notaro eventually reaches her destination, she never seems to return home, as there is no such place without her mother. Her stepfather, Ric, is a particularly poor communicator, and while he doesn't count her out, he seems more focused on making sure his surroundings—the home he shares with Notaro's mother, Susie—befit his own. Strict standards. He also suggests that Suzie's death severed his ties with Notaro and her brother Reno - who now have a "stranger on the street" relationship. Notaro plays a character named Tig Notaro, who transitions slightly from a stand-up comedian to hosting a The Moth-style radio show where she shares personal stories from her life. It's a bit of an unwieldy setup, and Tig's occasional monologues into the microphone usually don't work very well for the show: the narrative of the Mississippi one works better when it doesn't try to connect the thematic points too clearly. The same goes for Tig's L.A. girlfriend (played by Casey Wilson), a distinctly vulnerable stereotype that seems destined to immediately become her witty and quick-witted partner's long-term romantic choice. It also doesn't help that Notaro's real-life wife Allynne pops up as a possible romantic interest named Kate, though perhaps only the most die-hard Notaro fans will immediately make that connection.
