00:00 DIOR presents
00:13 Discover the craftsmen who make Dior Perfumes with love every day.
00:17 When you smell any scent,
00:19 whatever it is, a raw material
00:22 or a perfume,
00:24 you have two things:
00:26 on one hand the aesthetic side of the scent
00:29 meaning jasmine smells like jasmine, a rose smells like a rose.
00:32 But after there is a sort of physical constant
00:34 Dior Perfumer-Creator
00:36 that concerns the volatility of the product.
00:39 Les Fontaines Parfumées, Grasse, South of France
00:41 When you make a perfume, you have to keep that in mind.
00:44 And it is very difficult, even between professionals.
00:47 Sometimes we have trouble agreeing on the description of a scent,
00:52 because semantics can play tricks.
00:57 We are all different and perceive things differently.
01:02 The memory of scent is always linked
01:06 to what is around the scent. In order to remember a scent, the brain
01:11 remembers everything around the scent:
01:14 the place, the people, if there were people,
01:16 the light.
01:19 A scent it is in the air.
01:21 You don’t see it, you don’t taste it.
01:24 So it is something very abstract.
01:37 I learned how to present a formula from a master perfumer.
01:42 Organizing the raw materials that compose the formula,
01:47 natural or synthetic, following their order of evaporation
01:51 and trying to organize them by family,
01:53 meaning the aldehydic notes which light up quickly,
01:59 the fruity notes, the linalool notes
02:02 like bergamot, lavender, etc.
02:06 Spicy notes, iris notes, jasmine notes,
02:10 the combination, etc.
02:14 Now I can’t read a formula unless it is organized like that
02:18 because I am able to essentially smell a formula by reading it.
02:26 Miss Dior has this particularity
02:29 that it was the first perfume from Monsieur Dior
02:33 which he created at the same time as he created his couture house.
02:37 He considered perfumes with as much importance,
02:41 as much love and as much passion as his couture house.
02:44 And he considered that perfume was a way to dress,
02:48 like the final touch.
02:52 Miss Dior has become a classic.
02:55 It is a reference point for different olfactory families.
02:59 Miss Dior is a green chypre,
03:01 chypre being characterized by a precise accord
03:05 that involves notably bergamot, rose, jasmine
03:09 and patchouli, which was one of the key elements,
03:13 and oak moss.
03:15 When you mix them, they create an accord and give
03:18 what we call a chypre effect.
03:32 My first composition was what you call a fragrance of a thousand flowers.
03:35 A thousand flowers is when there are trials which fail,
03:37 but you don’t toss them out.
03:39 You put them in the same vat and mix everything
03:44 and then once the vat is full, you sell it on certain markets.
03:49 Except unfortunately people liked it, and I had to remake the same thing.
03:53 So you can imagine the complexity of the thing.
03:57 It was very instructive because you’re all alone.
04:01 We had the product, the blotters,
04:03 and we managed.
04:11 I used to come back from a night out, on a motorbike,
04:14 in the early morning when the jasmine was exploding.
04:20 It is pure emotion. We walked down paths
04:23 crushing oregano and thyme.
04:25 You accumulate all of that, you register it.
04:31 Anyway that was my youth, that was Grasse.
04:35 That is why I had to do something for Grasse and for my town
04:39 and the products from Grasse, because they deserve it.
04:45 If a woman were to be represented by one flower,
04:48 I think the rose is the most fitting.
04:51 It is the most universal flower. That is why it is used a lot in perfume.
04:55 Everyone knows the smell of a rose.
04:58 Everyone, in every country, in every culture.
05:01 It is basically the only flower
05:04 that is automatically positive.
05:08 So I believe more in the smell of a loved one
05:10 than the smell of love with a big L.
05:14 The scent of a loved one, yes. Whatever it may be, yes.
05:17 When you love someone, there are no bad scents.
05:20 We are mammals, so scent is part
05:25 of our bonds, part of us, recognition and everything.
05:31 And the scent of the heart is never forgotten.
05:34 Never, ever, ever.
