Discover the pros and cons of siding with Semine or Hashek in KCD2.
The "Necessary Evil" quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 presents a complex moral dilemma. This guide explores the consequences of siding with Semine or Hashek.
KCD2: Should You Side With Semine or Hashek
Quest Overview:
After completing "Back in the Saddle," the "Necessary Evil" quest begins. Von Bergow tasks Hans and Henry with gathering information from Nebakov Fortress and interrogating a prisoner. The interrogation's outcome determines whether von Bergow targets Semine or Nebakov Fortress. This walkthrough focuses on choosing Semine, where the most difficult decisions arise.
Prisoner Interrogation:
The interrogation involves several Speech checks. You can either threaten the prisoner (requiring specific Intimidation levels) or use torture instruments. The required Speech check options are:
- "We'll put in a good word for you." (20 Impression)
- "Istvan and I are old acquaintances." (20 Impression)
- "Otherwise, it'll end badly for you." (17 Intimidation)
After the interrogation, you learn about the bandit leader's identity and Semine's involvement. You can then inform von Bergow about Semine's connection to the bandits, leading to an attack on Semine's town, or you can say no one helped the bandits, which will lead to the attack on Nebakov.
Attacking Semine vs. Nebakov:
Choosing to attack Semine leads to more difficult decisions involving Hashek. Attacking Nebakov results in von Bergow handling the situation, ending the quest immediately. While avoiding bloodshed at Semine might seem appealing, letting Semine go unpunished for his actions is also problematic. Attacking Semine, despite having positive interactions with the town earlier, is often the more morally justifiable choice.
Crucially: If you choose to attack Semine, you must ride with the party. If you are left behind, the entire town will be slaughtered. Riding with them gives you a chance to help Semine.
Siding with Semine or Hashek:
Before the party departs, speaking with Hashek reveals his vengeful intentions and desire for excessive violence.
Upon arriving at Semine, you must choose between siding with Semine or Hashek:
- Siding with Hashek: Choose the dialogue option "Hashek is right." This will result in everyone in the town being killed. You can also find Olda in the tower and decide his fate.
- Siding with Semine: Choose the dialogue option "Olda deserves a trial." This is the recommended choice. While Semine's actions were wrong, Hashek's approach is far more destructive, leading to the deaths of many innocent people.
After defeating Hashek, speak with the Semines and advise them to burn their estate and flee. This will progress the quest.
Reporting to von Bergow:
The final step involves reporting to von Bergow. You can either remain silent and let Hans speak, or you can tell von Bergow what happened at Semine. It's recommended to let Hans handle the report. He is more diplomatic, which will keep both him and Henry in von Bergow's favor and allow von Bergow to proceed with his plans at Nebakov.
In summary: The "Necessary Evil" quest forces difficult choices. While siding with Hashek might seem like swift justice, it leads to the unnecessary deaths of many innocents. Siding with Semine, while acknowledging his wrongdoing, offers a more morally sound path, even if it requires confronting Hashek. Letting Hans handle the report to von Bergow is the most politically expedient option.
