How to Get All Companions in Avowed

Avowed features four permanent companions: Kai, Marius, Giatta, and Yatzli. Unlike some other RPGs, there are no hidden or secret companions beyond this core group. You can bring two companions on adventures, but they aren't all available from the start. This guide details when and how you unlock each companion.

Companion Recruitment Timeline

While you begin Avowed with temporary companions Garryck (an Orlan) and Ilora (a Paradisian smuggler, if saved), they depart after you reach Dawnshore and are not recruitable. All permanent companions are acquired as part of the main questline, so no extensive searching is required.

• Kai: The first companion you unlock, Kai joins you at the docks of Dawnshore. He serves as a tank, drawing aggro and making him ideal for "glass cannon" builds like archers or mages.

• Marius: Recruited shortly after arriving in Dawnshore, Marius becomes available after a specific story event sends you to a spooky location. Upon your return, you'll encounter him during a tavern brawl as part of the main quest, "An Untimely End." Marius is a ranger/tracker who highlights nearby loot, even through walls.

• Giatta: Arguably the most valuable companion, Giatta is the only dedicated healer. You'll first meet her during an argument in the Fior Mes Iverno bazaar (Emerald Stairs, the second area). However, she doesn't join your party until you progress the main quest, "The Animancy Method," meaning you'll acquire her midway through Emerald Stairs.

• Yatzli: An Orlan mage, Yatzli is encountered early in Emerald Stairs but doesn't become a companion until the third area, Shatterscarp. She specializes in DPS magic with some crowd control abilities.

Companion Training and Attribute Bonuses

After interacting with your companions and engaging in combat with them, they can provide permanent attribute bonuses:

• Kai: +2 Might, +2 Constitution, OR +1 to both.
• Marius: +2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, OR +1 to both.
• Giatta: +2 Intellect, +2 Resolve, OR +1 to both.
• Yatzli: +2 Intellect, +2 Perception, OR +1 to both.

Companion Control and Playability

You cannot directly play as your companions. Avowed, similar to Dragon Age: Inquisition, allows you to command them using their abilities. These abilities are cooldown-based, simplifying the system. Despite this, companions offer significant combat utility.

Best Companion Choices

Since you can only bring two companions at a time, choosing the right combination is essential. For most combat encounters (excluding companion quests and Ryngrim's Domain), Kai and Giatta are the strongest choices.

Giatta's healing and action speed buffs are invaluable. Kai's durability and aggro control provide you with greater freedom in combat. Marius' loot-finding ability is useful but depends on your priorities. Experiment with different combinations to find what suits your playstyle and build. Rotating companions throughout the game also adds variety and flavor to your experience.
