I will explain to you How to configure Hyper-V port mirroring

Port mirroring is a feature that mirrors the network traffic from the port of a source host to a secondary host for analysis. It can be used to monitor, troubleshoot, and analyze network communication and connection. In this post, we will learn how to configure port mirroring for Hyper-V, which is a native Windows hypervisor.

Configure Hyper-V Port Mirroring on Windows Computers

As far as port mirroring is concerned, where you can mirror the traffic from the source host to a second destination host, where there is a source or source host being monitored and its mirrored port and destination port are the observed ports. The technique has been implemented also under the name SPAN (Switched Port Analyzer).

In Hyper-V, we can use port mirroring to analyze the network traffic of machines through virtual switches, which Hyper-V virtual machines essentially use to communicate with the external network or internally with other machines. For this, you need to define a target virtual machine and install traffic capture software such as Wireshark or use other intrusion detection systems (IDS).

Port mirroring in Hyper-V works similarly to hardware port mirroring, but it operates at the virtual switch level, using switch extensions and port access control lists (ACLs) to set rules for traffic forwarding and sniffing. However, in the case of Hyper-V, port forwarding only works within a single host. If the machines are on different hosts, say, in the case of a failover cluster or after migration, the feature will not work.

To configure Hyper-V port mirroring, you need to follow the steps mentioned below.

Let's talk about them in detail.

1] Create a Virtual Switch

What we will proceed to do next is configure a virtual switch that would be used to transmit communication between all your virtual machines. First of all, follow the steps and points below:

In this way, we will create a virtual switch that we will use in this tutorial. If you already have a switch configured, you don't have to create a new one.

We need to make some additional settings on the switch. To do so, follow the steps mentioned below.

This setting was necessary to configure port mirroring.

2] Configuring the source virtual machine

Now, we are going to configure the source of the machine so that we can monitor its traffic, to do this follow the steps below.

If you want, you can configure multiple source virtual machines, the only thing you need to keep in mind is that you will need to use a single virtual switch and maintain uniformity. Once this is done, we will proceed to configure the destination machine.

3] Configure the Target VM

We will configure the target VM after the source VM was configured. Now you will create an additional network adapter on the target VM for more accurate network traffic analysis and disconnect all the network services from that adapter. Then you can make sure to perform a complete network traffic dump after shutting down the services and protocols that you don't need. Follow the steps mentioned below accordingly.

Now, you can analyze the network traffic from the source machine on the destination virtual machine using tools like wireshark.org.
