Most weapons in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer enable players to switch between automatic and single-fire modes, but this is not a feature on all of them. Marksman rifles, sniper rifles, and pistols tend to have a set way of firing.

In case you are trying only to finish up the Week 4 challenge for Season 5, which requires kills with single fire, then you will need to be careful about weapons. Any weapon that comes default in fully automatic or burst-fire variants can be converted to single-fire.

If you want to adjust the firing mode of an applicable weapon, then equip it while playing a multiplayer match. You will see two icons in the bottom-right corner of your HUD representing automatic mode—three bullets—and single-fire mode—one bullet. The button to toggle between them is typically B on keyboard or the left D-Pad on controller.
