In Cult of the Lamb, health is measured through Hearts for both the Lamb or Goat. These Hearts reach a critical point by being depleted through enemy attacks, at which point they will turn into halves. That is where they may be topped up through Crusade rewards or Tarot Card draws. Not all Hearts, however, are created equal.
The base health pool consists of Red Hearts and carries over between Crusades. They can, however, be permanently increased through Sermons, the game's upgrade system.

Secondly, Crown Upgrades provide two ways for a player to obtain Diseased Hearts: The Hunger Crown Ability: When eaten before a Crusade, Minced Follower Meat gives two extra Hearts, but is not guaranteed to spawn as Diseased Hearts.
The Darkness Within Crown Upgrade: Start each Crusade with one Diseased Heart.
On the other hand, the Fleece of the Diseased Heart changes all Tarot Cards to become Diseased Heart cards; however, only one is allowed to be active. Wearing this fleece will poison the Lamb when he becomes injured.
