We recently taught you how to deactivate Instagram Reels. YouTube has a similar feature called Shorts, which you'll probably want to learn how to turn off.
Unfortunately, YouTube doesn't currently offer a built-in option to completely disable Shorts within the app or on the website. However, there are a few workarounds you can try to minimize your exposure to them:
How to Disable Shorts on YouTube
1. Not Interested on Individual Shorts (Mobile App):
This method involves indicating your disinterest in individual Shorts you see in your feed. Here's how:
- Open the YouTube mobile app.
- Locate a Short video in your feed.
- Tap the three dots in the top right corner of the Short.
- Select "Not Interested" from the menu.
By repeating this process for several Shorts, YouTube's algorithm should start understanding your preference and gradually show you fewer of them.
2. Hide the Shorts Shelf (Desktop Website):
While you can't entirely remove the Shorts section, you can hide it on the desktop website:
- Open YouTube on your web browser.
- Locate the "Shorts" section on the homepage.
- Click the "X" icon in the top right corner of the "Shorts" shelf.
This will hide the Shorts section from your view, although new Shorts might still appear scattered throughout your feed.
3. Use Desktop Site on Mobile Browser (Temporary Solution):
- Open the YouTube website on your mobile browser (Chrome, Safari, etc.).
- Tap the three dots in the top right corner.
- Select "Request Desktop Site".
This will display the desktop version of YouTube, which doesn't have a dedicated Shorts section. However, keep in mind that this is a temporary solution, and switching back to the mobile view might bring back the Shorts section.
4. Third-party solutions (Limited Use):
There might be third-party browser extensions that claim to block Shorts, but these solutions come with potential risks and might not be reliable. It's advisable to proceed with caution if considering this route.
5. Provide Feedback to YouTube:
You can let YouTube know your desire for a Shorts disable option through their feedback channels. The more users who request this feature, the higher the chance it might be implemented in future updates.
While none of these methods completely eliminate Shorts, they can help you see them less frequently. Hopefully, YouTube will consider adding a dedicated "disable Shorts" option in the future.
