About Macy´s

Macy's is a department store in the United States. Its flagship store is in Herald Square, New York City and has been the "largest store in the world" since 1924, although it is now tied with Harrods store in London in commercial space and both behind the Galeries Lafayette Haussmann Paris.1 The company has designated other major regional stores in the major urban areas and operates a total of 810 stores in the United States. (September 2008) .2

The company produces the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a well-known parade celebrated annually on the streets of New York City since 1924. The company also sponsors the Fourth of July fireworks show, which began in 1976.

Macy's was founded in 1829 by Rowland Hussey Macy, a businessman. On October 28, 1858 opened the first store and total sales were $ 11.06. From the beginning, the logo of the store was a star that came from a tattoo that Macy had done when he was young. By 1851 Macy had established a dry merchandise store in downtown Nantucket, Massachusetts that had initially served as a whaling community. Macy moved to New York City and established a new store called "RH Macy & Company" on the corner of 14th Street and 6th Avenue, then expanded to 18th Street and Broadway on Ladies' Mile ", The elite district of the nineteenth century, and still remains there.

In 1875, Macy teamed up with two partners: Robert M. Valentine; And Abiel T. La Forge, and just two years later in 1877 Macy disappeared.

In 1893, R. H. Macy & Co. was acquired by Isidor Straus and his brother, Nathan Straus, who had been licensed to sell porcelain and other products at Macy's. In 1902, the flagship store moved to Herald Square on 34th Street and Broadway. Although the store in Herald Square consisted primarily of only one building, it was expanded with new construction, and then the store began to occupy the entire block from 7th Avenue on the west, Broadway on the east, and 34th Street on South and 35th Street in the north. Although there were some exceptions in the block with the small buildings, at the corner of 34th and Broadway Street, in which they were authorized by agreement to have Macy's bags and signs in the buildings located in Streets 35 7.

The original R. H. Macy and Company Store building on Broadway, was built between 1901-02 by the architects firm De Lemos & Cordes. The building has a Palladian facade, but in recent years has been added other things. Also remodeling westward in 1924, 1928 and 1931, all designed by the architect Robert D. Kohn. All the buildings have an Art Deco style.4 Recently the building was designated as a National Historic Landmark. It has one of the few wooden electric stairs still in operation.
