Why Are Commercials Seemingly Getting Stranger?

Commercials seem to be getting more and more strange as time goes by. With every new ad campaign, especially around the Super Bowl, there is always some incredibly weird, or sometimes even disturbing, ad that makes the rounds around the internet.
This is, of course, intentional by the companies who are marketing their product. It’s a tactic in order to get people to think about their product more. But, there are some questions that might arise with this.For instance, would having a strange ad make people not want to associate with your product? Couldn’t it ruin your brand image? Couldn’t there be a whole host of other problems that I can’t even think of!?I mean, who in marketing came up with that weird puppy monkey baby ad for Mountain Dew? Weren’t they afraid that people would find their ad a little too disturbing and wouldn’t want to buy their product because of it?Well, no. First and foremost, we have to understand what an advertisement is, what its purpose is, and why companies aren’t afraid to make a little controversy in them.

What is an ad?

Let’s say you have a really great product. Something you think people would want, and something you think people could benefit from having. And, of course, something that you think you can make money off of.So, let’s take an example of some really great and well known products. It could be a physical good such as a brand of soda like Coka Cola, a service such as a streaming service like Netflix, or an online casino like PlayCroco online casino.It could also be a digital good such as a video game, movie, song, or whatever else you can think of. The point is that you should think about having some good or service you want to sell to people and make money off of.But, what if people don’t know about your product? Or, there are other competing brands that have a similar product? Well, that’s where advertising comes in! A way to get your product into the hearts and minds of people.And this is where we must understand a very important point. Advertisements are not just to make a product known to people. Advertisements are designed to make you feel like you recognize and are familiar with a product.I doubt there are any companies that think when they put out an ad it’s going to cause someone to run out and buy their product. Instead, they make it so when you need that product on your own, you will be more likely to choose their brand.This is because the name of the brand seems familiar to you. You feel like you recognize it and will be more likely to pick their product off the grocery store shelf rather than some other brand. Even if their brand isn’t the best, or isn’t the cheapest.

Why Strange Ads?

So, now that we know what the purpose of an ad is, we can explain more clearly why companies would want to make strange and peculiar ads. It’s all about memory. People remember things that are strange.Weird things tend to stand out in our memory. Put this on top the idea that weird things tend to be a bit taboo, and you have the perfect recipe for your advertisement going viral across the internet.It doesn’t matter if people talk negatively or positively about the product, all that matters is that they are talking about your products. Controversy has a tendency to split out of people’s memories over time, but your product won’t.How many people remember, or care anymore, about the controversies regarding advertisements? More so, how many people cared enough to boycott a product because of them?I would say not many. Instead, it just churned up a furry of free advertisement for those companies, and they slowly get to see the money they rake in because of it.And that is why commercials and advertisements seem to be getting stranger and stranger. Controversy is free advertisement, and the more people think about your product, the more they will be likely to choose it. All of this leads to every companies bottom line; money.-
